Verdict:Best free-enough start: Gamma Free (400 credits, no refresh) or Canva Free if you already live in templates. Best stay-in-PowerPoint: Microsoft Copilot in PowerPoint when your Microsoft 365 plan includes it. Best editable PPTX polish gate: Beautiful.ai on Pro/Team/Enterprise (export is plan-locked). Pick by export format and license you already pay for—not by listicle rank.

Short answer: the best AI presentation maker depends on price gate + PPTX path. Free-enough: Gamma Free (400 signup credits, no refresh per Gamma Help) or Canva Free (US$0 on canva.com/pricing). Best in-PowerPoint: Microsoft Copilot in PowerPoint when your Microsoft 365 plan includes it (Support how-to). Best plan-gated editable PPT polish: Beautiful.ai on Pro / Team / Enterprise (export article). We did not hands-on test these four on our test machine—prices and flows are from official pages plus a cited Tom's Guide Gamma review.
How we ordered the tools: from free-entry tools (Gamma, Canva) to tools that need a paid plan for the full workflow (Beautiful.ai, Microsoft Copilot in PowerPoint), per each vendor’s pricing page. We did not test any of the four hands-on, and none of them is ours.
Design hub context: Canva alternatives, free Canva alternative, Canva vs Adobe Express, Canva vs Figma.
AI answers already name Gamma, Copilot and Beautiful.ai, but rarely spell out free-versus-paid pricing or include Canva. Comparison dimensions (docs + cited review—not our stopwatch):
US Google results for this query (checked 2026-10-15) mix listicles, Canva’s AI presentations page, Reddit, Zapier, Adobe Express, and Prezent.
Below is the free-vs-paid gate for each tool—no invented dollars. Figures are from official pages fetched or text-extracted on 2026-10-15; where cards were unreadable we write See pricing page.
Gamma (gamma.app/pricing; Help plans / credits)
Canva (canva.com/pricing)
Beautiful.ai (beautiful.ai/pricing)
Microsoft Copilot in PowerPoint (Copilot pricing)
What it is for: web AI that turns a short brief into a multi-slide deck (also docs/sites per vendor). Presentation-first, not a Canva-sized template mall.
What third-party testing shows (not us): Tom's Guide (Amanda Caswell, published 27 November 2025) typed a work-life-balance prompt and got an ~10-slide deck in under 30 seconds, praised coherent structure and polished design, and noted slide-level regenerate / rewrite. Caveats in that review: vague or repetitive “AI” bullets, and weak audience/tone unless you specify investors vs students vs engineers. The piece describes Gamma as free to try with premium options—align that with current pricing / Help, not with dollars we could not read.
What we did not do: create a Gamma account or time a prompt on our test machine. Not marked as tested.
Price / export gates: Free = 400 non-refreshing credits (Help). Paid plans add monthly credits and branding removal (Plus+). PPTX export is claimed on the pricing FAQ—verify after signup. For dollars: See pricing page.
What it is for: generate and refine a deck inside PowerPoint when Copilot is licensed—best when the deliverable must remain a normal .pptx for legal, brand, or IT reasons.
Documented flow (Support, paraphrased—not a UI script): start a new presentation → open Copilot → Add Content → Agent Mode → submit a prompt → answer or skip clarifying questions (audience, style) → refine the outline in chat → generate slides → keep chatting to edit. Microsoft notes AI output should be human-reviewed; file-size and template tips appear on the same Support page.
Price gate: use Microsoft Copilot pricing. Example business bundles we read: Business Standard with Copilot $23.50/user/mo yearly; Business Premium with Copilot $32.00/user/mo yearly. If Copilot is missing in the ribbon, check subscription and admin settings—do not assume every Microsoft 365 seat includes it.
What we did not do: run Copilot on our test machine (not tested).
What it is for: AI-assisted decks with Smart Slide layouts, aimed at people who will present in PowerPoint after export.
Export evidence (official): Beautiful.ai’s support article states editable PowerPoint export is available only on Pro, Team, and Enterprise. That is the key gate: free trial or lower access may let you design, but editable PPTX is a paid-plan feature—confirm before promising a client a .ppt handoff. The product’s PowerPoint landing page frames idea → designed slides → export; we use that as path evidence, not as a sales CTA.
Price (official pricing page, 2026-10-15): Pro $14.50/mo billed annually; Team $40/user/mo annual or $50 monthly; Enterprise custom; 14-day trial of Pro/Team with card-on-file FAQ wording.
What we did not do: sign up or export a deck (not tested).
What it is for: AI-assisted presentations inside Canva—templates, Brand Kit, and the same editor you use for social graphics. Canva’s own “AI Presentation Maker” / Magic Design positioning shows up in search results; many “best AI PPT” listicles skip Canva even when Google surfaces it.
When Free is enough: one-off internal decks, light AI allowance, and you already accept Canva’s share/PDF/PPT download options for your plan. Free is US$0 on canva.com/pricing.
When to pay: you need Pro/Business AI allowance, premium stock, or Brand Kit depth. We read Pro US$144/year (one person) and Business US$250/year per person on the yearly pricing view—re-check monthly toggles and tax on the live page before purchase.
Honest limit: Canva is a design suite with presentations, not a PowerPoint-native Copilot. If IT requires .pptx editability offline, test Canva’s current download formats on your plan—we did not.
Related free non-AI path: if you only need static graphics/PDF without AI slides, free Canva alternative (Inkscape/Scribus tested elsewhere)—different category.
Use this before you cancel a trial or promise a client file:
If the deliverable must be a native PowerPoint file, Microsoft Copilot in PowerPoint is the only option here that works inside PowerPoint itself; it needs a Microsoft 365 subscription with Copilot, per Microsoft’s pricing page. If you prefer to design elsewhere and hand over a PPTX, note that Beautiful.ai limits editable PowerPoint export to Pro, Team, and Enterprise, and Gamma’s PPTX claim comes from its pricing FAQ—test one export before you promise a client an editable file. For related decisions, see Figma alternatives.
No hands-on accounts for Gamma, Canva, Beautiful.ai, or Copilot. Gamma list prices not readable from our pricing-page fetch (See pricing page). Copilot availability depends on Microsoft 365 / org license—confirm on Microsoft’s site. Tom's Guide is third-party evidence only. Volume for this slug not invented in body.
Docs-and-citations comparison. Official pricing fetched 2026-10-15: Beautiful.ai pricing + editable-PPT support article; Microsoft 365 Copilot pricing + PowerPoint Copilot Support how-to; Canva pricing via text extract of canva.com/pricing (Free US$0, Pro US$144/year, Business US$250/year per person). Gamma.app/pricing dollar cards were not readable in the page text we fetched—plan structure and Free 400 credits from Gamma Help; PPTX export claim from Gamma pricing FAQ; dollar amounts written as See pricing page. Third-party: Tom's Guide Gamma hands-on (Amanda Caswell, 2025-11-27)—cited, not claimed as our test. No Gamma, Canva, Beautiful.ai, or Copilot account created; none is marked as tested. Nearby non-AI free design exports (Inkscape/Scribus) stay on Canva alternatives pages and are not AI deck tests.
