Verdict:CapCut is the mobile/social template editor; Resolve is the free-to-start desktop NLE with color and Fairlight. Step up to Resolve when templates stop being enough—not because CapCut is ‘fake editing.’ We proved free Linux cuts with Shotcut/Blender VSE, not Resolve.
| Tool | Price | Platforms | Best for | Tested |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CapCut | Free tier; Pro pricing varies by region—see CapCut payment page | iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, Web | Mobile/social template-driven short video | Docs only |
| DaVinci Resolve | Free; DaVinci Resolve Studio $295 | Windows, macOS, Linux | Desktop NLE with color, Fairlight and Fusion | Docs only |

Short answer: pick CapCut when mobile templates and effects are the product. Pick DaVinci Resolve when you want a free-to-start desktop NLE with color, Fairlight and Fusion (Studio $295 per Blackmagic tech specs). We installed neither; free Linux proof nearby is Shotcut / Blender VSE.
How we ordered the tools: this is a role comparison, not a ranking. We have no product of our own here and did not install either app; the verdict follows each vendor’s official pages.
Resolve: Windows, macOS, Linux per Blackmagic. CapCut: mobile-first with desktop/web products on its site—we did not verify every desktop feature. Our test machine runs Linux; Resolve still not installed for this review.
CapCut is tap-template fast. Resolve uses pages (Cut/Edit/Color/Fairlight/Fusion). Creators often underestimate Color page depth. Budget days, not an afternoon.
Export MP4 from CapCut; reconnect in Resolve. No official CapCut project importer on Blackmagic’s materials we cite. Always keep a reference export before deleting CapCut drafts.
CapCut’s marketplace is the moat. Resolve’s moat is grading, audio and Fusion nodes. Rebuilding a CapCut “trending effect” by hand in Resolve is usually the wrong goal—rebuild the edit, not the meme template.
Phone-first creators, template velocity, TikTok/Reels cadence, small storage workflows.
You need scopes, nodes, Fairlight, Fusion, or Linux desktop post. Also see Premiere Pro vs DaVinci Resolve if Adobe is the other pole.
Many creators export CapCut masters → Shotcut for offline trims → Resolve when color becomes the job. Skipping straight to Resolve is fine if you accept page UI; expecting CapCut template parity inside Resolve is how people bounce back in a week.
DaVinci Resolve, on platform alone: Blackmagic lists Windows, macOS and Linux, while CapCut lists iOS, Android, Windows, macOS and web—no Linux desktop app. If Resolve’s hardware requirements are a problem, Shotcut and Blender VSE are the free editors we exported with on Linux. For related decisions, see CapCut alternatives, CapCut vs InShot and migrate Premiere Pro to DaVinci Resolve.
Docs-only CapCut/Resolve. Shotcut/Blender VSE MP4 evidence reused from CapCut/Premiere alternative tests in our test logs.
No CapCut install, no Resolve install, no phone tests, no XML round-trip.
Neither CapCut nor DaVinci Resolve was installed. Resolve Free/Studio $295 and platforms from Blackmagic tech specs (2026-10-14). CapCut Pro pricing described as region-variable from CapCut help. Related Linux evidence: Shotcut 25.03.29/melt and Blender 4.3.2 VSE exported H.264 MP4s on CapCut/Premiere alternative passes—not a substitute for Resolve or CapCut hands-on.
