Short answer: for a free Lightroom alternative, use darktable when you need a catalog plus develop, or RawTherapee when you need deep RAW and batch conversion. We exported JPEGs from the same Canon CR2 with both on Linux. Affinity is free for individuals per affinity.studio (Windows/macOS; docs-only). Paid options stay on Lightroom alternatives.

How we ordered the tools: tools we exported with hands-on (darktable, RawTherapee) come first; Affinity is last because we only reviewed its official site. None of these products is ours.

What free must replace

Lightroom Classic combines a library and a non-destructive RAW developer. Cloud features in Adobe photo plans are a third layer. Free tools usually nail develop first, catalog second, cloud almost never. If your blocker is Sensei masks on a phone, free desktop software will not feel like a lateral move—say that before uninstalling.

Category context: best free photo editor. Role split with Photoshop: Lightroom vs Photoshop.

darktable — closest free Classic shape

What it replaces: lighttable + darkroom.

What we saw: Debian darktable 5.0.1 darktable-cli opened a 25 MB Canon EOS 5D Mark III CR2 and wrote a 5794×3868 JPEG (~5.3 MB). A run that also downscaled to 2048 px wide finished in ~2.4 s wall time on our CPU-only VM. Defaults looked slightly warm/dim for a tungsten bathroom scene—usable. Package 5.0.1 lagged newer releases listed on darktable.org/install when related pages were checked; that page also notes Apple silicon macOS builds and currently no official Intel Mac releases.

What it lacks: Adobe cloud sync; one-click Lightroom preset parity; module names differ from the Basic panel. XMP import of some Lightroom develop settings is documented in darktable's manual—not pixel-identical.

Compare: Lightroom vs darktable.

RawTherapee — free develop and batch

What it replaces: Develop + scripted folders. Not a catalog database.

What we saw: RawTherapee 5.11 wrote a 5788×3862 JPEG (~3.8 MB at quality 90). A two-line .pp3 raising exposure +1 EV applied from the CLI in ~2.8 s. Plain-text sidecars are the migration win for people who version edits beside RAWs.

What it lacks: collections-as-database, faces, mobile, reading Lightroom edits. Upstream listed newer than our 5.11 Debian package on related checks.

Get it: rawtherapee.com (GPLv3).

Affinity — free for individuals (docs-only)

affinity.studio states Affinity is free for individuals and combines photo, vector and layout. It is a poor Classic catalog substitute and we saw no Linux download on the vendor pages we used. We did not install it—not marked as tested.

Free migration checklist

  1. Export TIFF/JPEG masters of portfolio images while Lightroom still runs.
  2. Keep RAW + XMP pairs; try darktable's documented Lightroom XMP import for partial settings.
  3. Rebuild keywords and collections you rely on weekly.
  4. Use RawTherapee for folder batches even if darktable owns culling.
  5. If tethered studio capture is the real requirement, stop—see Lightroom vs Capture One (not free).

What we deliberately left out

DxO PhotoLab and Capture One appear on our Lightroom alternatives page because photographers ask for them, but they are not free Lightroom alternatives. Listing them here would blur this page’s free-only focus. Same for Adobe's own free mobile trials—confirm those on Adobe's site if you need phone-only editing.

Best free Lightroom alternative for batch RAW conversion

If your main job is converting folders of RAW files rather than managing a catalog, RawTherapee is the better free pick: it is a deep RAW developer with batch processing, and its CLI exported our Canon CR2 to JPEG. Keep darktable for culling and the library if you need one.

How we tested

Debian 13, CPU-only, no Adobe apps. Canon CR2 from raw.pixls.us (CC0). darktable-cli and rawtherapee-cli JPEG exports. Affinity: vendor site wording only on 2026-10-14.

Catalog risk management

Back up the Lightroom catalog and previews folder before any export marathon. Keep at least one external copy of RAW originals offline. Free tools reduce subscription cost; they do not reduce the cost of a single-disk failure. If you only migrate a subset of shoots, start with a recent year you still understand rather than a 2014 archive you never open.

Batch vs interactive editing

RawTherapee’s CLI + .pp3 profiles shine when you apply the same exposure correction to a folder of similar frames—we demonstrated a +1 EV profile on one CR2 as a minimal proof. darktable’s strength is interactive module work plus lighttable organisation. Many free-stack users run both: cull/organise in darktable, blast folders through RawTherapee when the look is already decided. That is still $0 software cost; the cost is learning two UIs.

FAQ

What is a free version of Lightroom?
Adobe does not sell a free desktop Lightroom Classic. The free desktop replacements we ran are darktable and RawTherapee. Affinity is free for individuals per its site but is not catalog-first.
Is darktable free forever?
darktable is open source; we installed it from Debian at no cost. Check darktable.org/install for platforms (Apple silicon macOS listed; Intel Mac caveats on the install page).
Can I import my Lightroom catalog for free?
Partially. darktable's manual documents importing some ratings, tags and develop settings from Lightroom XMP—not a full Classic catalog clone. Export hero JPEGs/TIFFs before cancelling Adobe.
Is RawTherapee enough without darktable?
Yes if you do not need collections/smart albums. We batch-applied a +1 EV .pp3 from the CLI on the same CR2.
Where do paid Lightroom alternatives go?
On our Lightroom alternatives page; this page covers free tools only.
Linux free Lightroom alternative?
darktable and RawTherapee—the two we ran on Debian.
How do these tools handle my files and privacy?
darktable and RawTherapee are desktop software (open source) that we ran locally on our own machine without creating an account, so our test files stayed on that machine. We did not review the data-handling terms of Affinity for this page; read each vendor’s privacy policy before uploading client files or personal data.
When was this page last tested and checked?
Hands-on runs of darktable and RawTherapee were done for the original version of this page. Official price and platform pages were last checked on October 14, 2026. This page was last updated on October 18, 2026; prices were not re-checked in the October 17–18 updates.

Methodology

darktable 5.0.1 and RawTherapee 5.11 were installed from Debian 13 and run via CLI on a CPU-only Linux machine, converting a 25 MB Canon EOS 5D Mark III CR2 (CC0 from raw.pixls.us) to JPEG. Affinity was not installed; affinity.studio states free for individuals. No Lightroom install. Paid tools intentionally omitted from the tools table—see our Lightroom alternatives page.
