Verdict:SketchUp is conceptual 3D massing; AutoCAD is precision 2D/3D DWG drafting and documentation. Free nearby proof is FreeCAD/OpenSCAD/Blender exports—not AutoCAD or SketchUp GUI.
| Tool | Price | Platforms | Best for | Tested |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SketchUp | Free web plan; Go $10.75/mo annual; Pro $33.25; Studio $71.58 (per plans page) | Web browser, Windows, macOS, iPad | Conceptual push-pull 3D modeling | Docs only |
| Autodesk AutoCAD | See Autodesk pricing (confirm monthly/annual SRP at checkout) | Windows, macOS, Web, Mobile | Precision 2D/3D DWG drafting and documentation | Docs only |

Short answer: SketchUp is conceptual push-pull 3D (massing, interiors, client models). AutoCAD is precision 2D/3D DWG drafting with industry toolsets. They meet on “draw buildings,” not on the deliverable. We installed neither; free Linux evidence nearby is FreeCAD / OpenSCAD / Blender exports on free SketchUp alternative.
How we ordered the tools: this is a role comparison, not a ranking. We have no product of our own here and did not install either app; the verdict follows each vendor’s official pages.
SketchUp: web + desktop + iPad per Trimble. AutoCAD: Windows/macOS desktop plus web/mobile per Autodesk. Linux users looking for free drafting often land on LibreCAD (2D) or FreeCAD—not AutoCAD.
SketchUp: fast spatial sketching. AutoCAD: command-line/precision drafting culture, layers, Xrefs, standards. Switching without changing the deliverable (concept model vs permit set) creates false “this software is bad” conclusions.
AutoCAD’s world is DWG and plotted documentation. SketchUp’s world is .skp models plus LayOut on Pro. Interchange is possible but lossy—plan standards early. We did not run a DWG round-trip.
AutoCAD FAQ distinguishes AutoCAD vs AutoCAD LT (2D focus). SketchUp is 3D-first conceptual. For free 2D DXF, LibreCAD is the docs-backed option we installed but could not finish PDF export on (cad software free).
FreeCAD STEP+STL, OpenSCAD STL, Blender STL during our SketchUp alternatives tests—proof of free solid/mesh export, not proof of AutoCAD replacement.
Early design, client visualization, push-pull massing, schools on SketchUp for Schools (Trimble documents education free paths—verify eligibility).
Construction documents, DWG standards, specialized toolsets (Architecture/MEP/etc. per Autodesk), offices already standardised on Autodesk.
Parametric parts → FreeCAD/OpenSCAD. Mesh viz → Blender (SketchUp vs Blender).
If the contract says DWG sheets, AutoCAD (or a DWG-capable CAD) wins regardless of SketchUp preference. If the contract says concept model and stills, SketchUp or Blender may win on speed. FreeCAD sits between when parametric solids matter without Autodesk seats.
Neither has a Linux desktop app: SketchUp lists web, Windows, macOS and iPad, and AutoCAD lists Windows, macOS, web and mobile. Linux users looking for free drafting usually land on LibreCAD (2D) or FreeCAD; FreeCAD exported STEP and STL on our Linux machine. Blender, which also exported STL for us, doubles as a free motion-graphics tool—see our After Effects alternatives.
Docs-only SketchUp/AutoCAD. FreeCAD/OpenSCAD/Blender/LibreCAD evidence in our test logs. Prices fetched 2026-10-14 from official pages.
No SketchUp/AutoCAD install. AutoCAD dollar figures may vary by Flex/promo—confirm on Autodesk. No DWG round-trip test.
Neither SketchUp nor Autodesk AutoCAD was installed. Roles summarized from Trimble and Autodesk product pages. SketchUp plan prices from sketchup.com/plans-and-pricing. AutoCAD pricing: Autodesk overview showed starting-at messaging; FAQ on the product page listed monthly/annual SRP figures—readers should confirm at checkout; we do not invent Flex quotes. Related tested evidence: FreeCAD STEP/STL, OpenSCAD STL, Blender STL on SketchUp alternatives; LibreCAD incomplete.
