Verdict:SketchUp is push-pull conceptual modeling (architecture/interiors). Blender is a mesh/animation/3D suite that also exports STL—we proved the export path. Pick by job: building concepts vs mesh/VFX/print mesh cleanup.
| Tool | Price | Platforms | Best for | Tested |

Short answer: SketchUp is push-pull conceptual modeling for buildings and interiors. Blender is a mesh / animation / VFX suite that also exports STL—and STL export is the side we actually ran (684-byte box mesh on Linux). Neither replaces the other as a drop-in. Free parametric CAD nearby: free SketchUp alternative.
How we ordered the tools: this is a role comparison, not a ranking. We have no product of our own here; Blender is the side we tested, SketchUp is reviewed from Trimble’s plans page.
SketchUp: web, Windows, macOS, iPad per Trimble materials. Blender: Windows, macOS, Linux—our test platform.
SketchUp optimises for quick spatial concepts. Blender optimises for mesh topology, modifiers and a huge keymap. Architects switching often keep SketchUp for massing and use Blender for Viz—or switch to FreeCAD for dimensions.
SketchUp’s .skp is not Blender’s native world. Plan OBJ/STL/FBX-style exchange. We exported STL 684 bytes from Blender for a 100×50×30 mm box—manufacturing mesh proof, not a BIM claim.
SketchUp Pro adds LayOut documentation; Studio adds visualization/BIM-oriented extras per plans page. Blender is not LayOut. For parametric solids, FreeCAD is closer than Blender (cad software free).
Blender 4.3.2 background script: mesh box → STL matching the FreeCAD/OpenSCAD dimension set used during our SketchUp alternatives tests.
Architecture/interior concepts, client-friendly push-pull, Trimble ecosystem, LayOut docs.
Mesh modeling, animation, look-dev, Linux, $0, STL cleanup for print viz—not construction documentation.
Common pattern: SketchUp massing for clients → Blender for hero renders/animation → FreeCAD if parts go to fabrication. Treating Blender as “SketchUp but free” skips LayOut/documentation needs and creates false expectations.
Blender, if you are comfortable with mesh modeling: it exported an STL on our Linux machine. SketchUp is built for push-pull conceptual models; for dimensioned printable parts, FreeCAD or OpenSCAD may suit you better than either. Blender also doubles as a free motion-graphics tool; see our After Effects alternatives if you animate as well. For related decisions, see SketchUp vs AutoCAD.
Blender STL in our test logs. SketchUp docs-only from Trimble plans page 2026-10-14.
No SketchUp install. No architecture-scale BIM test. Blender test was a simple mesh STL, not a full building model.
Blender 4.3.2 exported a 100×50×30 mm mesh box to STL (684 bytes) on CPU-only Debian during our SketchUp alternatives tests. SketchUp was not installed; Free/Go/Pro/Studio plan prices and positioning from sketchup.com/plans-and-pricing on 2026-10-14. FreeCAD/OpenSCAD evidence on related free pages is cited for context only.
